Day 3 - Caramel Apples

Car-mel or car-a-mel--however you say it caramel is divine. Apples and caramel together = heavenly! Today we made caramel apples together. We were lucky to have Cade's friend, James, over to join in the fun.

This particular recipe doesn't require cream, so the caramel is more of a transparent syrup. When it dries on the apple you can still see the pretty color of the apple, and it isn't very sticky so you can actually get it off your teeth. I found this easy recipe at the Family Fun website.

Caramel Apples
1 1/2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
6 tbsp. water
Popsicle sticks
8 to 10 apples (McIntoshes work well)

Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the brown sugar and water. Stir until it has a smooth consistency. Gently bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 3 minutes, until the pan's sides get steamy and the mixture is thin but somewhat sticky. Remove from heat. Pierce the center of each apple with a Popsicle stick, then swirl in the caramel syrup until coated. Place apples on a greased cookie sheet to harden. Refrigerate for at least 1 to 2 hours. Serves 8 to 10.

Here is how it goes:
First, gather the apples and put popsicle sticks through the core.
Next, gather your ingredients.
Third, be sure sure to take a bite out of the apples while Mom isn't looking.
Then, after Mom gets the apples coated in the caramel syrup, decorate with sprinkles.
You can't have too many sprinkles.
Add some plastic spiders. Step back and admire your work.
Tip: I put the apples into cupcake wrappers after I swirled them in the caramel to try to cut down on sticky messes.
Lastly, enjoy!
Chow down!
Get sticky!
